Once covering the entire Australian islands, the rainforest now only covers about 310 miles of the north of Queensland's coastline. After years of climate and geography change, the rainforest was cut down to a little strip of land. Parts of the forest were cut down for the benefit of farming, mainly that of sugarcane. Despite their small size, the rainforests of Queensland still have a wide range of biodiversity. For the past 415 million years, the Queensland rainforests have been home to 3,000 different types of plant species, and many different animal species.
